The spiritual practices of joy and pleasure are not optional, but are essential for building resilient communities who are grounded in Love. Come explore with Rev. Tiffany and your community, how we can engage with Joy!
You are invited to join the community install of artist Aaron McIntosh’s participatory artwork: Invasive Queer Kudzu. This event will be taking place on Thursday, July 31 from 2 to 4 pm at the Reece Museum.
Invasive Queer Kudzu will be the final artwork that is installed as part of the Reece Museum’s upcoming exhibition, The Place Speaks. This exhibit is designed to explore intersections of Appalachian culture, folk art, and folk religion, as well as interpretations of nature and Appalachian placeness as it reveals the divine to artists. The Invasive Queer Kudzu project raises visibility of Southern queer folks and their communities by using the metaphor of kudzu to exponentially grow queer stories across the South.
Participants of this workshop are invited to craft their own stories or messages of support that will contribute to the growing mass of Southern queer kudzu. Participants will be provided with a cloth kudzu-shaped leaf, which they can write/draw/adorn with their stories using fabric markers, embroidery floss, and other embellishments, which could include small personal mementoes, symbolic vestiges, or tokens of memory brought from home. “Engulfing hills, trees and old buildings in a dense stranglehold, the kudzu vine colonizes, and alien landscapes emerge. An ‘invasive’ species, kudzu taps into our fears of otherness, connecting it in many ways to perceptions of queerness.” – Aaron McIntosh.
Aaron McIntosh (b. 1984, Kingsport, Tennessee) is a cross-disciplinary artist whose work mines the intersections of material culture, family tradition, sexual desire, and identity politics in a range of works including quilts, sculpture, collage, drawing, and writing. As a fourth-generation quilt maker whose grandparents were noted quilters in their Appalachian communities, this tradition of working with scraps is a primary platform from which he explores the patchworked nature of identity. Since 2015, McIntosh has managed Invasive Queer Kudzu, a community storytelling and archive project across the LGBTQ South.
This event is free & open to the public. Invasive Queer Kudzu will be part of the exhibition The Place Speaks: Sacred and Artistic Genealogies of Appalachia, which opens on Monday, August 4, 2025.
The Reece Museum is a unit of the Center of Excellence for Appalachian Studies and Services, which is housed in the ETSU Department of Appalachian Studies. A service about bugs, spiders, and snakes. What can we learn from these little creepy crawlies that inspire fear in so many people?
We want to make everyone aware that at this Sunday's "Creepies and Crawlies" service, there will NOT be any snakes or bugs* inside the sanctuary. While our topic is exploring how these feared creatures can teach us more about ourselves and acceptance, we are keeping them out of the sanctuary out of respect for people who may have phobias.
During All Ages Religious Education (which will either be on the back porch or in the REZ building depending on weather), two very docile non-venomous pet snakes will be present, but these snakes will NOT be present in the sanctuary.
*when we say there are no bugs inside the sanctuary, we mean no bugs that we put there on purpose. The ones who show up on their own are outside of our control!

After a lifetime of activism, Barbara Gittings' last action for the LGBTQ+ movement was to come out in her nursing home newsletter: "As a teenager, I had to struggle alone to learn about myself and what it meant to be gay. Now for 48 years I've had the satisfaction of working with other gay people all across the country to get the bigots off our backs, to oil the closet door hinges, to change prejudiced hearts and minds, and to show that gay love is good for us and for the rest of the world too. It's hard work — but it's vital, and it's gratifying, and it's often fun!" This Sunday Rev. Tiffany kicks off Pride month with an exploration of this incredible woman's life, and we commission our newly elected Board into their year of service.
As part of the Music Room/Hospitality Room clean up, we discovered a few dozen old CDs of music created by members and friends of HVUUC.
We don't know how old the CDs are and don't recognize a few of the names on the CDs, but this music is worth celebrating! (rather than just collecting dust and taking up space)
They are on a table in the Fred Ball Room, please take one next time you're at church!

Everyone we meet has a different perspective. How do we seek out these perspectives, and what do we learn when we search beyond our own comfort zones and echo chambers? This Sunday Rev Tiffany explores the people we meet on our quest for truth and meaning, with some help from Steven Roberts who will be reflecting on his practice of getting haircuts in foreign countries.

As a prophetic people, Unitarian Universalists have often been at the front of transformation and liberal change. But what the heck does it mean to be prophetic? What is prophesy? Is this about the end of the world? And don’t we have enough doomsayers? Let’s explore the idea of faithfully imagining the kind of world we long to see with Shawn Gibson, UU Ministerial candidate.
Our church is going to create a plaque honoring congregants who served in the military.
If you have served and would like your name to be on the plaque, please email veterans@hvuuc.org with your name, dates of service, and military branch.

The poetry of Shel Silverstein has captured the imagination of several generations. This Sunday, Rev. Tiffany and some of the biggest Shel Silverstein fans in the congregation see what we can learn from this unique and much beloved source.
Fellowship Funds available for Auction Equity
In order to allow as many congregants as possible to participate in our Annual Service Auction fundraiser, the Stewardship Team is happy to offer the opportunity to work volunteer hours in lieu of paying for service auction events.
Here are the details:
-An hour of volunteer work is worth $20/hr. for auction credit
-There is a cap of 15 volunteer hours for credit per person
-The volunteer hours cannot be volunteer work that you are already doing for the church, but will be high-need volunteer areas determined by Rev. Tiffany and/or the Stewardship Team, but you will get some say in what you do.
How it works:
-You attend the service auction and bid like everyone else does. Make sure not to bid more than $300 total or you will exceed the cap on hours.
-When it's time to check out, let the person checking you out know that you are going to pay with volunteer hours.
-Post auction someone will follow up with you to set up a time to review the list of high-need volunteer work, and together you will choose what to do.
-You will get an occasional follow-up from that person to see how you are making progress in your volunteer hours.

Parenting can feel especially hard when the world doesn't feel worthy of holding your children. How do we parent as authentic, faithful, Unitarian Universalist when the world feels like it is on fire? The origins of Mother's Day is intertwinned with the Peace movement, and it gives us some clues about how we can do this. On this day Rev. Tiffany explores the challenges of parenting, the hope that we still have, and dedicates a new Peace Pole for the congregation.
Registration has been extended to May 10th, limited rooms still available as well as camping. Scholarships available, no one will be turned away!

HVUUC Statement of support of U.S. immigrants facing oppression, violence, or alienation
Our Unitarian Universalist Principles affirm the inherent worth of everyone. Our UU shared religious values, of interdependence, pluralism, justice, equity, generosity, and transformation, all of which revolve around “LOVE at the Center” require our sacred spaces continue to offer loving support and safety for those facing oppression, violence, or alienation, including immigrant communities, regardless of their documented status.
On January 20, 2025, a U.S. Department of Homeland Security memo rescinded protections to churches, schools, and hospitals from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). HVUUC joins the Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA) in challenging the ending of ICE’s “sensitive locations” policy, opposing any interpretation of law which would allow immigration raids in houses of worship and religious ceremonies.
Subjecting places of worship to ICE actions without a judicial warrant substantially burdens our religious exercise in violation of the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution and the Religious Freedom Restoration Act (RFRA). These enforcement actions at places of worship interfere with HVUUC’s religious activities and our ability to fulfill our mandate to welcome and serve all, including immigrants.
Specifically, this Social Justice Call to Action:
States HVUUC’s support of the right of conscience, non-violent civil disobedience, and the use of the democratic process to create a more just world.
Affirms HVUUC’s intention to create a Beloved Community where immigrant and refugee lives matter, unrelated to United States citizenship status.
Authorizes the Social Justice Committee to designate local events and activities (such as parades) in which HVUUC may advocate for immigration rights with a message of “Siding With LOVE.”
Approved by HVUUC member vote on April 22, 2025
